Business context

The French logistics group ID Logistics acquired Kane Logistics, a US company that owns warehouses and trucks and sells logistics services. The group decided to roll its SAP S/4HANA core model out to the new subsidiary. The main difficulty was understanding how Kane billed its services and fitting that billing structure into the S/4HANA processes and the group core model, with the core team based in France.

Key contributions

  • Gathered Kane's requirements on the logistics modules in workshops and reported them back to the core team in France.
  • Configured the sales process and the purchasing release (validation) strategy in S/4HANA.
  • Designed the purchasing and invoicing forms for the subsidiary.
  • Wrote functional and technical design documentation and demonstrated the sales and purchasing processes in Fiori tiles.

Responsibilities in detail

Analysis & design

  • Requirements gathering on the logistics modules
  • Business workshops with Kane teams
  • Requirement restitution to the core team in France
  • Functional and technical design documentation

Configuration

  • Sales process configuration
  • Purchasing validation (release) strategy configuration
  • Purchasing forms design
  • Invoicing forms design

Demonstration

  • Demos of the sales and purchasing processes in Fiori tiles

The challenge

A core-model rollout works when the subsidiary's business can be expressed in the group's standard processes. Kane sold logistics services (warehousing and transport) with its own way of billing customers, so the job was to understand that billing structure precisely and decide how it maps to the S/4HANA sales process and the group core model, while the core model itself was owned by a team in France.

How I worked

  1. Requirements. I ran workshops with Kane on the logistics modules and gathered their requirements, sales and purchasing first.
  2. Restitution to the core team. I presented the requirements back to the core team in France so that each gap could be decided at core-model level.
  3. Design. I wrote the functional and technical design documents for the subsidiary's processes.
  4. Configuration. I configured the sales process and the purchasing release strategy (the approval workflow for purchasing documents), and designed the purchasing and invoicing forms.
  5. Demonstration. I demonstrated the sales and purchasing processes to the business through Fiori tiles, so users saw the S/4HANA way of working rather than transactions.
